In Search of the Vanished Beauty

Like a recurring dream, I struggle with the question. Why can I not see Grahame Park, the housing estate where I live, as beautiful? I continually reproach myself for feeling this way, since it is inhabited by people no less deserving of the good than people anywhere else. I say it again: a recurring, oppressive question.

And I imagine that even if everything were new, and we were there in the mid-to-late 1970s, when these blocks of flats were handed over – even then it would be an effort to see them as beautiful. Because for some reason, they are not. And the reason is not the sad fact that they have been neglected – by the local council, and by those who were brought here to live. And even if it is not beautiful, there is nevertheless something painful about it: the dying of beauty. Or the absence of a beauty that was never born (or could never have been born). It keeps bleeding through into the present.

But what is the reason? My answers are only lines of inquiry. Why is it that, when I compare these streets with those of settlements back home (in Hungary), including housing estates of a similar kind, the streets there are beautiful? Even when their beauty is itself an endangered beauty. Here, where Grahame Park now stands, there was, barely eighty years ago, an open-air airfield in the fields. So these houses, quite literally, grew out of nothing. And perhaps that is the answer itself. The “single-layered”, one-dimensional growth of a city that suddenly grew large. There are no historical layers, no precedents in the streetscape. A city had to be built quickly where before there had been pastures and runways for mechanical birds.

Perhaps it is precisely because of its single-layeredness that beauty here is so fragile (and so absent). The first touch of decay, of deterioration, erases this first, and only, layer of beauty’s effort. However hard I force my eyes and my heart. I would be deceiving myself – something here is missing forever.

And to the tentative answer above we might add something else. One-generation homes. Indeed, even in the modern housing developments around here, there are no people who remain. Everyone lives here for a few years, and then moves away. And those who were brought here (or came here), now predominantly from immigrant backgrounds, somehow cannot “put down roots”, which would seem to be a prerequisite for the birth of beauty. There is no human eye that has “grown to love” these streets from childhood into old age. There have not been, there are not, enduring human gazes that would consecrate them, transfigure what is into beauty.

(I have written before that this absence of beauty makes one ill, or at least causes a daily loss of energy.) And so I sit down in the church, in the heart of the estate, on a sunlit afternoon. Its bare brick walls would seem to predestine this place, too, not to be beautiful. Saint Augustine’s is built from the same red bricks as Grahame Park itself. And yet, perhaps through the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, here within, minute by minute, an atmosphere of beauty is born – and in abundance. Here the heart and the eye come to rest. The church is inexplicably filled to overflowing with beauty. In contrast with what lies outside, it is fleeting and fragile – but real beauty. This beauty is filtered and sifted from God and from the souls of the generations who pray here. Thanks be to God, it cannot be switched off. All that is needed is the meeting of an eye and the interior of a church.

Minduntalan átvérzik a jelenen.

Hala Istennek, kikapcsolhatatlanul. Csak szem és templombelső találkozása szükségesek.
